Introduction

These videos will show you how to remove a tape cartridge that is stuck inside a Scalar i40 or Scalar i80 library. Follow these procedures if you can't easily remove a tape cartridge by following the resolution steps provided by the Web client.

After removing a stuck tape, watch the "Inspecting LTO Tape Cartridges" video to help you determine whether you can re-import the recovered tape into the library.

Before You Start

Try the following, in the order presented, before attempting to manually remove a stuck tape:

  1. Always make sure you have the latest library and drive firmware using one of the following methods:
  1. If the library posted an error, look up the error and associated Maintenance Guide information in the Error Code Lookup Tool (especially important for DT022 or DT087).
  2. Shut down the library.
  3. Disconnect the SCSI/SAS/Fibre cabling from library and drive(s).
  4. Power up the library.
  5. Once the library becomes ready (robot status is Idle), attempt the methods below (in the order shown) to remove the tape cartridge from the drive:
  1. If the library posted an error, look up the error and associated Maintenance Guide information in the Error Code Lookup Tool (especially important for DT022 or DT087).

If you cannot remove a stuck tape using the methods above, follow the Scalar i40 and Scalar i80 Lodged Tape Removal Instructions (available on CSWeb) and refer to the videos below to help you.
